Sinemateka.lt is a project, which has been maturing for several years on the initiative of NGO Meno Avilys. The project aims to give access to restored films and the context they were made in.
The development of our website was inspired by the desire to present expanded forms of cinema, contextualize the audiovisual heritage and to make it easily accessible. The cinematheque was developed by the new generation of cinema historians, curators, educators, restorers and archivists.
The idea
The website offers digitalized and restored documentary films and video art works. All the restored films constitute the result of long-term focused activities of NGO Meno Avilys. In 2012, we started to digitalize and restore documentary films trying to provide them with the possibility to circulate freely in national and international cinemas. A new stage started in 2018, when the video art works preserved in the VHS format were digitalized.
In 2014, following the transfer of the works from an analog medium to a digital format, the need to develop an internet space emerged. At the moment, the website includes 19 digitally restored documentaries and 40 video art works; the cinematheque is constantly supplemented with new works. Each film or a group of artworks is given an interpretative context – cultural, historical, social or creative. The website content is viable and updated regularly.
How to use the website?
Our website is fairly simple to use – just choose any film you wish to see from the list. If you are interested in the film production or historical context, select the tab “Read.” If such possibility is not available, be patient – we are still preparing the texts, looking for videos and developing the site. We recommend using Google Chrome browser.
All films can be provided for distribution and screenings.
